As a first generation student of color, my teaching philosophy emphasizes inclusivity. We do not have to understand other people’s differences, or accept all of them, but if we can create a space that allows equity to thrive and knowledge to be transferred without any hierarchical confines, we can all leave that space having contributed and having learned. I am constantly experimenting with different facilitating techniques but some fundamental guidelines that shape my inclusive teaching involve 1) engagement beyond the classroom, 2) scaffolding student skills in my lesson plans, and 3) decentering knowledge through active learning.
